HISTORY

Tmt.kousalya Govindarajan started her career as a Teacher & rose to the level of Deputy Directress of School education which was great & praiseworthy. She was a very strict disciplinarian & donated her entire property worth about many crores for the noble cause of Girls Education. In order to honour her late husband Dr. Salai Govindarajan, she named the school after him as Dr.Salai Govindarajan Matriculation School for Girls.

The school was inaugurated on 24th May 1987 by Thiru J.H. Tarapore,B.E.,F.I.E., and started functioning from 12th June 1987 with 39 pupils in Standard VI and grew as full fledged Matriculation High School in the year 1991-92 under the management of the VENKATESAPURAM TARAPORE EDUCATIONAL TRUST, Chennai23. Major Dr. Salai Govindarajan was born on 27th October 1909 at Madras. He was a brilliant student throughout, starting his school education at Muthialpet High School, George Town, Madras, Intermediate at Pachaiyappas College and he graduated in medicine in Madras Medical College in the year 1934. He took M.D. degree in Pathology at University of Madras and Diploma in Bacteriology at Manchester U.K. being deputed as a W.H.O. fellow.

He was equally successful in his career entering service in the year 1936 as Demonstrator in Bacteriology at Madras Medical College; he rose to the post of Dean, MMC. He held many coveted posts like curator Pathology Museum, Madras Medical College, Director King Institute, Guindy etc. He served in Indian Army during World War II as a specialist in Pathology holding the rank of a Major. In recognition of his efficient and devoted service. Government of Tamil Nadu extended his service till October 1968 even after his retirement on superannuation in October 1964. After retirement he was made the Controller of Examination at the University of Madras till 1973. Being an enthusiastic and restless worker he was helping as a Pathologist at Ramalingam Medical Centre, Madras-7 till 31st June, 1985. He passed away on 24th May, 1986.

Every year prayer meeting is observed for Dr.Salai Govindarajan in the school campus Dr.SGMS as a salutation to the great soul Dr.Salai Govindarajan. This school as usual secured 100% result in the X STD Public Examination held in March 2015. Selvi R. Kavitha has secured 6th Place in State Level and 4th place in the District Level. Selvi. M.Soundarya has secured 9th place in the State level and 7th place in the district level. This is the second time that the students have secured state ranks in the history of Dr. SGMS.

Smart Class has been introduced from the year 2014. Digital Smart boards have been installed in every class room.
